Elden Ring Nightreign Guide Community Picks: Top Recommendations
tbh I went into Nightreign thinking it was just Elden Ring with co-op. First night in the game and I got absolutly destroyed. No Torrent. No sites of grace to teleport to. The map literally shrinks around you like a battle royale. It's a three-player roguelike at its core and the Souls combat is just the foundation. The pacing, the resource management, the way you have to coordinate roles with your team. All of it is completely new.
So don't go in with the same mindset you had for the base game. Each run takes about 40 minutes. Three days, two nights. World bosses, camp clearouts, gear runs scattered throughout. At the end you face the Nightlord. If a teammate goes down you can revive them. But when the circle is closing in and you're the last one standing and the revive window is gone. That's it. Run over.
The thing I see people ask about constantly on Reddit is why they're not doing the same damage as someone else with the same weapon. And honestly nine times out of ten it's because they haven't read their class passive or set up their relics properly. Every class has a unique Ultimate Art and a passive skill. Here's the part most people miss. Weapon passives work even if the weapon is sitting in your backpack unequipped. As long as there's no hand icon marking it you get the passive for free. So when you clear a camp and find a weapon you don't plan to use. Don't just toss it. That passive is free stats.
Wylder is your balanced frontliner. Greatswords. High solo friendliness. In coop they work as the main tank or secondary DPS. I've found they're the safest pick if you're just starting out.
Guardian is the pure tank with halberds and greatshields. Medium solo viability but in a three stack they're the anchor with team buffs. Kinda slow on their own though.
Ironeye is ranged physical with bows. And I'm gonna be straight with you. Solo Ironeye is miserable. But in coop with someone drawing aggro they put out insane damage from the backline.
Duchess does this weird dex slash int hybrid thing with daggers and magic. Status effects specialist. Medium across the board. Not sure about this but I think Duchess might have the highest skill ceiling of all the classes.
Raider is the strength monster with colossal weapons. High solo viability. Main DPS or off tank in coop. Absolutely deletes bosses if you know what you're doing.
Revenant is faith casting with scythes and seals. Low solo. Healer and buffer in a group. If nobody on your team is running support you're definately gonna wipe on the Nightlord.
Recluse does int slash faith hybrid with staffs and straight swords. Medium solo. Ranged magic DPS in coop. The FP recovery on this class is honestly a bit ridiculous once you get the loop going.
Executor is the bleed specialist with katanas and dual wield. High solo. Single target burst damage that makes boss health bars just evaporate. Rivers of Blood on this class feels like cheating sometimes.
Scholar is pure support with thrusting swords. Basically unplayable solo. Pure debuff and assist in teams. You need people who actually coordinate to make Scholar work.
Undertaker is strength slash faith with hammers. Medium across the board. Works as off tank or burst damage.
So for Wylder the weapon that honestly feels overtuned is Blasphemous Blade. Taker's Flames clears mobs and chunks bosses at the same time and it heals you. Rotten Battle Hammer with scarlet rot is almost a universal answer to every problem and Wylder's stamina pool lets you keep up the pressure. Ordovis's Greatsword gives you holy plus physical damage that works for the entire three day run without swapping.
Guardian I've found really shines with Commander's Standard. The Rallying Standard buff is team wide attack and defense and in a three stack that makes a massive difference. Vulgar Militia Saw builds bleed fast and Guardian's unique block counter animation makes it hit harder than it looks on paper. Vyke's War Spear triggers madness consistently and madness in PVE is seriously underrated.
Raider's best pick is Axe of Godfrey. Regal Roar boosts your attack and closes distance and mobility is Raider's biggest weakness so this weapon basically patches the hole in the kit. Rotten Greataxe with scarlet rot plus strength scaling is one of the highest DPS options period. Grafted Blade Greatsword's Oath of Vengeance stat boost is incredibly valuable over a three day run.
Executor with Rivers of Blood is just a health bar delete button. I've found once you stack the full combo the actual damage numbers are like two to three times what the stat screen shows. Dragonscale Blade gives you ice lightning with frostbite buildup plus flat damage and it shreds high HP Nightlords. Moonveil's Transient Moonlight gives Executor reliable mid range damage which is what the class lacks most.
Recluse with Sword of Night and Flame is the obvious pick. Two weapon arts, beam plus sweeping flame, and Recluse has built in FP recovery so you basically never run out of mana once the cycle gets going. Lusat's Glintstone Staff is uniquely valuable because Stars of Ruin doesn't just do damage. You can save downed teammates from range. And Pike is the simplest survival tool. The thrust range means you stay safe while keeping up damage.
Here's the thing about weapon drops in Nightreign. They're random. You cannot go into a run planning to get one specific weapon because you will not find it and then you'll be scrambling under circle pressure with whatever garbage you scrounged up. Get comfortable with three or four weapons per class and use whatever drops.
Also don't dump all your smithing stones into one weapon. Going from plus two to plus three costs about the same as taking two weapons to plus two each. Two medium upgraded weapons gives you way more flexibility than one maxed weapon. Especially when you're dealing with different boss elemental weaknesses.
Run toward the safe zone thirty seconds before the circle starts closing. I am not exaggerating when I say dying to the circle is the most common non combat death in the entire community. It's not even close.
Everyone should carry Warming Stones. Not just the support. Most team wipes happen because nobody has time to stop and drink a flask. Not because the boss damage is too high.
If you're playing Raider against a boss. Retaliate is your highest priority ability. Twelve second cooldown. It interrupts. It staggers. It completely breaks the boss's attack rhythm. A good Raider isn't doing damage. They're controlling the fight.
Duchess's Restage doesn't just replay damage. It can replay a teammate's Ultimate Art. If you coordinate the timing a doubled Wylder Onslaught Stake does more burst in three seconds than thirty seconds of normal attacks.
Ironeye solo is self torture but Ironeye in coop with a tank drawing aggro is top tier backline DPS. Don't let tier lists fool you. The context matters.
Scholar solo is not really viable. The whole class is designed around team support. Debuff analysis. Relic effect sharing. AOE healing. If you're a solo player just pick Wylder or Raider or Executor and save yourself the headache.
Skipping world bosses is not cowardly. It's smart. You have to weigh three things at once. Circle timer. Night deadline. Your team's current state. Getting greedy and wiping the whole run is way worse than just moving on.
Before the Nightlord fight take fifteen seconds to make sure everyone swapped to the right resistance talisman. Gladius needs fire resistance. Heolstor needs holy resistance. Dreglord needs physical defense. This takes fifteen seconds and it lets you survive two more hits. In a boss fight two hits is the difference between winning and restarting.
The Nightlords rotate randomly so you never know who you're facing until you load in. Gladius is the three headed one and in phase two it splits into three dogs. Everyone takes one. Physical burst damage and bleed work best here and a Raider plus Duchess plus Ironeye comp handles it well. Nameless King has two phases. Kill the dragon first. Ranged damage and frost or bleed are the way to go with Ironeye plus Recluse plus Guardian. Heolstor has two health bars and speeds up dramatically in phase two. Holy damage and bleed and a comp of Raider plus Duchess plus Revenant covers it. Balancers require the team to spread out and Scholar's Communion ability links everyone together. Sleep and status effects are the key with Scholar plus Executor plus Recluse. Dreglord doesn't have an obvious weakness but bleed works fine. Clear the zombie adds first then focus the boss. Wylder plus Raider plus Duchess is solid here. Mohg resists bleed so go physical or frost. Those red trident pillars need to be destroyed immediately and Wylder plus Guardian plus Ironeye works.
But honestly the specific comp matters less than one thing. Make sure your team has at least two different damage types. If all three of you stack physical or all stack status effects you're going to hit a wall when the Nightlord resists your entire team's output.
So talk to your teammates before you lock in. PSN and Xbox support cross gen matchmaking so PS4 plays with PS5 and Xbox One plays with Series X and S. But no cross platform play. PC has the biggest player base and fastest matchmaking. Console players should try to find a fixed group.
If you're committed to playing solo. Here's what keeps you alive. First night your goal is not to clear every camp. Get to level three. Find one weapon that doesn't feel terrible. Get at least one elemental talisman. Then move toward the safe zone edge. Greed kills solo players more than any boss does. Before the second night you want at least a plus two weapon and a talisman that counters the current boss element. If you haven't seen a Flask of Crimson Tears upgrade by this point prioritize camps with church markers. Third day. Skip the world boss. Seriously. Farm small camps for smithing stones and push your main weapon to plus three or plus four. Everything you've accumulated over the two days determines whether you even see the Nightlord.
And the hardest thing about solo honestly isn't the difficulty. It's that when you die nobody can pick you up. In base Elden Ring dying sends you back to a grace. In Nightreign solo dying means the run is just over. That mental adjustment takes time. Either treat every death as information gathering or find two regular teammates.
So about finding teammates. The Elden Ring Nightreign LFG channels on Discord are the most active place right now. Reddit's r slash Nightreign also has people posting for groups regularly. Don't rely on random in game matchmaking. The problem with randoms isn't skill level. It's that nobody cares about your relic setup. And the relic system is the most overlooked but most impactful part of your entire build.
Community consensus right now is that Slate Whetstone for faster bleed buildup and Crimson Amber Medallion for max HP are the two most universally useful relics. They fit almost every class. Class specific relics depend on your build but as a starting point just farm these two first.
There's also this thing the community figured out recently. Dormant Powers are permanent account wide buffs from boss drops. They don't just apply to the current run. Every clear makes all your characters stronger permanently. If you're stuck on a particular Nightlord knowing that each attempt is still building your account power helps with the frustration I think.
Anyway that's about everything I've picked up from way too many hours in this game and too much time scrolling through Reddit and Mobalytics. The meta is still shifting and people are finding new stuff every week so...
